When
was that summer when I was so free?
Was
led then by heart - greatest pain, my skinned knee
No
cell phones or pagers you know where to find me
Seeking
an eagles eye view from atop that old oak tree
None
of us knew Latin - yet we did “seize the day”
Though
endless seemed time – nightfall was met with dismay
We
knew without being told, the importance of play
The
call of our spirit was all we’d obey
Never
got tired – you know what I mean?
Done
without water bottles, power bars or caffeine
Often
went all day no meal breaks between
Outdoors
for hours we used no sunscreen
Rode,
ran – walked for hours – until ready to wretch
Despite
all this exercise – never once did we stretch
Frisbees,
and footballs – baseballs to catch
Ill-gotten
gains from the neighbor’s berry patch
The
neighborhood bully got his in the end
Next
time he showed up met big brother of your friend
“Swamp
water” was the result of drinks we did blend
Designer
clothes non-existent – funky patches did mend
Best
years of our lives we were told at the time
You
certainly could get much more with a dime
Who
knew lemonade could not be made with a lime
Act
your age – I think not – learn from a time - oh so sublime.
