Break the Chain

Walked alone through life upon a twisted path
Choices shaped by fear of an unknown wrath
No rest of laurels upon such an anguished seat
Hope dashed on the rocks – exiled on isle of defeat

Acrid smell of despair - from the abyss
Soul’s yearning – treated to a Judas kiss
Day of judgment’s arrived – time to repent?
Release the grip of mid-life torment!

Through faltering fingers slid the dream
A fitful sleep ends with a silent scream
In my side a spear – like, divine thorn
No escape from that which must be born

Take heed I’m told – all is not lost
Peace can be yours – a meager price the cost
Reach deep inside and touch your pain
Share with open heart – and break the chain

In light of this – may I appeal?
Surely to God – a better deal?
From deep within – the still small voice
Heaven on earth - or hell – what's then, your choice!
