Ode to a Dolphin

Weightless, free in an amniotic embrace
The ocean’s their sky – navigated with grace
Some of their kind – have vanished - without a trace
It’s humans responsible, for this disgrace

Many stories are told of men rescued - on the high sea
Instead of thanks – exploited on a tourist marquee
In the interest of science – penned like - some trainer’s pet
Thousands die every year in the commercial, fish net

Highly intelligent – multi-linguistic, communiqué
Many hours spent inventing complex forms of play
When they wind up as our victims surely their spirit we betray
Instead of learning from them – they’re in some “exotic” buffet

For eons they’ve serve as keepers of history
More fittingly revered as teachers of life’s mystery
Instead of genocide benefiting industry and fashion
They could serve as role models for living life filled with passion
